Voice Mastery: Keeping your French alive this summer

Jul 6

Summer has a habit of changing our routines.

One minute you're sitting down with good intentions to get something done.

The next you're eating outside because the sun has appeared.

Friends pop round.

You decide to go to the beach.

Or you simply enjoy doing... nothing.

I think that's one of the nicest things about summer.

The trouble is, French often disappears along with the routine.

We tell ourselves we'll get back to it next week.

Then next week somehow becomes September.

Voice Mastery: keeping your French alive this summer

That's one of the reasons I love Voice Mastery at this time of year.

It doesn't ask very much of you.

3 phrases.

A couple of minutes to record them.

Then you send them to me.
And I give you feedback and something to think about.
That's it!

That's enough to keep French alive.

This month we're working on something that has fascinated me for a long time.

Intention.

Take this phrase.

Il faut profiter des beaux jours.

Without changing the sentence imagine saying these words to your neighbour while you're watering the garden.

Now imagine saying exactly the same words to a friend who's been working far too hard.

Or to your daughter who's about to spend another sunny afternoon indoors.

Same French.

Different intention.

That's the sort of thing we are experimenting with this month.

Not just pronouncing the words.

Thinking about who you're talking to.

Why you're saying them.

How you want them to land.

It's a surprisingly enjoyable thing to play with.

Every Friday throughout the summer I am here and will be sending my usual personalised feedback. Is that something you could do with?

Sometimes we work on rhythm.

Sometimes on syllables.

Sometimes on those tiny little words that make French sound French.

But underneath all of that, we're really working on something much bigger.

Speaking with meaning.

If summer becomes busy, don't worry about spending hours studying.

Record your three phrases.

Keep your French voice moving.

September will thank you for it.
