About The French Room | Ellie Louis and the Story Behind the School
If you care about French, you’ve probably tried to learn it properly.
You’ve bought books.
Downloaded apps.
Collected vocabulary.
You’ve put in the effort.
And yet the same frustrations return.
You understand more than you can say.
You recognise words but struggle to build sentences.
And conversation still feels just out of reach.
If that sounds familiar, the problem isn’t effort.
It’s the way the language is usually taught.
A different way of learning French
Most language learning focuses on collecting more words.
But real fluency comes from something deeper.
Understanding how the language works.
How words connect.
How they shift meaning.
How the same structures appear again and again in real conversation.
When you start seeing French this way, something changes.
You stop memorising isolated pieces.
You begin building the architecture of the language.
How The French Room began
The French Room was created by Ellie Louis, after many years working with adults who loved French but felt stuck in their progress.
Before creating The French Room, Ellie’s career moved through several different worlds.
She worked as a wine buyer, spending time immersed in French culture and language.
She worked in design and project management, learning how to structure complex ideas so that people could engage with them more easily.
She also worked as a facilitator, helping groups learn together in thoughtful and collaborative ways.
When she began teaching French to adults, these experiences came together in an unexpected way.
Again and again she saw the same pattern.
People were working hard.
But the structure of the language remained hidden.
So she began designing a different kind of learning environment.
One that combined:
• thoughtful self-study
• regular speaking practice
• carefully chosen texts and examples
• and a slower, more selective exploration of the language.
Over time, this approach became what is now The French Room.
A community of people who care about learning well
One of the pleasures of learning inside The French Room is the people you meet.
Students come from many different backgrounds, but they tend to share something important.
They care about learning well.
They enjoy thinking about the language.
And they encourage each other as their confidence grows.
Many students stay for years — not because they feel pressured to continue, but because learning French becomes part of their weekly rhythm.
It’s not unusual for classes to become the highlight of the week.
