The French Room Cinema and
Book Club
The current programme and beyond...
Some French stories deserve more than one evening’s attention
Most people watch a French film once or finish a book and move on quickly.
This club is designed differently.
We spend 3 months with each carefully chosen work so that the language, humour, references and atmosphere have time to become familiar.
A phrase repeats.
A joke lands differently the second time.
A character’s way of speaking starts to feel recognisable.
French culture begins to feel inhabited rather than observed from outside.
This is designed for adults who enjoy lingering.
How it works
Simple. Calm. Unhurried.
Each 3-month cycle includes:
- 1 carefully selected French film or book
- monthly live discussions with Ellie
- community discussion space inside The French Room
-
cultural and language guidance throughout the cycle
There is time to:
- revisit scenes
- reread passages
- notice expressions
- explore themes
-
hear French differently over time
No rushing.
No pressure to “keep up”.
Just regular contact with intelligent French culture throughout the year.
Who this is for
This is for adults who:
- want French to remain part of their life
- enjoy thoughtful conversation
- love French films, books and culture
- miss having French regularly in their week
- prefer depth over rushing
-
enjoy learning through stories and observation
You do not need perfect French to take part.
Curiosity matters more.
Common Questions
You may be wondering ....
If I join mid-programme what do I get?
Your annual membership gives you 12 months of access from the day you join — covering whichever cycles fall within that period. You don't miss out by joining later; you simply start from wherever the club is and continue forward.
My French isn't very good. Will I manage?
No.
You do not need to understand every word to enjoy taking part.
The discussions are designed to help you gradually become more familiar with the language, humour, themes and cultural references across the 3 months.
Curiosity matters far more than perfection.
What if I don’t finish the book or watch the film in time?
That’s completely fine.
This is designed as a slower cultural experience, not a race.
Many members revisit sections gradually across the cycle and often notice more through repetition.
You are still welcome to join the discussions even if you are only part-way through.
Will I have to speak during the live discussions?
You are welcome to participate as much or as little as you like.
Some members enjoy contributing regularly while others prefer listening and absorbing at first.
Both approaches are completely fine.
