You are not watching a demonstration.
You are:
- chopping
- mixing
- timing
- adjusting
…and using French while you do it.
Language is tied to action.
This is where verbs like:
- prendre
- couper
- laisser
- mettre
- cuire
stop being abstract and start being physical.
You feel what they mean because you are doing them.
Everyone is cooking the same dish, at the same time.
That creates:
- a shared pace
- natural repetition
- spontaneous exchanges
You hear the same structures again and again, in context.
Each Cook-along session is organised in advance.
You receive:
The recipe
Clear, step-by-step instructions.
The shopping list
A single, simple list so you can prepare in advance.
The timing
So you arrive ready to start with everyone else.
Sessions may include:
- Hachis parmentier (lentils, beef, or duck options)
- Tarte Tatin with ready-made pastry
The focus is not complexity.
It’s using French while doing something real.
There is no pause button.
You:
That’s where the fun and the learning happens.
Because everyone is doing the same thing, you get:
- repetition
- variation
- immediate reuse
This helps phrases become more familiar.
At the end, you have:
- a finished dish
- language you’ve actually used
- phrases you can reuse next time
This is not:
- a passive cooking demo
- a translation exercise
- a perfectly controlled environment
It’s live, practical and slightly unpredictable.
It's also not a Cordon Bleu cooking course!
You will enjoy and get the most from Cook-along if:
- you enjoy practical, hands-on learning
- you are willing to follow instructions in French
- you want language to connect to real life
Your level matters less than your willingness to have a go.
Cook-along sessions are free for anyone learning currently at The French Room. You join direct from your My Study calendar.
You just need to have been signed into Zoom Live Events once.
Before the session, you will receive:
- the recipe
- the shopping list (in one clear list)
- timings so you can prepare properly
You are expected to:
- arrive ready
- have ingredients prepared
- join on time
If you’ve ever thought:
“I understand this, but I don’t use it”
Cook-along closes that gap.
You use French while your hands are busy —
and that’s when it starts to stick.
