Louise’s Story: Keeping the French Connection Alive

Louise didn’t just “like” France—she had lived it. Her twin boys were born there, and though the family no longer lives in France, she’s determined to keep that part of their identity alive.

“I want my boys to grow up knowing that French is part of them,” she said. “I want to keep that connection open.”

She came to The French Room to keep her own French strong—not just for herself, but for her sons. It wasn’t about ticking a box. It was about family, memory, and passing something on.

From Ear to Expression: Bridging Natural Skill with Formal Structure

Louise had picked up French naturally, through daily life. But when she began more formal study again, she sometimes felt that her learning-by-ear approach wasn’t enough. Grammar, in particular, felt like a hurdle at first—like it might trip her up or slow her down.

But as she kept going, something shifted.

She began to see how grammar helped her say things more clearly. How understanding structure actually gave her more freedom, not less. And when that clicked, so did her confidence.

“Once I saw the point of it,” she said, “I really started to enjoy it.”

Louise is an actress by profession, and over time she found ways to bring her natural performance energy into the classroom. She now speaks French with more personality and ease—no longer holding back, but letting the language live in her voice.

Sharing What She’s Learned—With Flair

One of Louise’s most memorable contributions to The French Room came when she recorded a “Tuto”—a tutorial for her fellow students. In it, she tackled one of the trickiest aspects of French grammar: masculine and feminine nouns.

But this wasn’t your average grammar lesson.

She brought creativity, humour, and plenty of memorable tips to help her classmates lock in the rules. It was a perfect mix of her artistic side and her growing fluency—and a great example of how students at The French Room aren’t just learning, but supporting each other.

A Joyful Part of Her Week

Louise never misses her weekly class if she can help it.

“It’s one of the happiest moments in my week,” she says. “I always look forward to it.”

Whether it’s practising dialogue, experimenting with pronunciation, or simply laughing and learning with others, she brings her full self to class—and leaves feeling uplifted and more connected to the language she loves.

She also took part in an intensive week-long course, which she described like this:

“Within a friendly, relaxed, and supportive environment—as I happily slurped my coffee—there was listening, speaking, observing, experimenting, recording... it was all in there. Recommend 100%.”

Learning French Like Louise

Louise comes to a live group class once a week. She keeps things ticking over between classes with her Bonjour Brilliance monthly subscription. She likes the themes that come through in the Rendez-Vous Tutos because they remind her of her time in France. She also likes to choose things to study from the 6 Learn French Libraries as the mood takes her.
Louise attended a week long immersive course online and recommended 100% to anyone who is thinking of doing the same.
